Body composition and metabolic testing in Port Coquitlam

At the Team Botezelli studio in Port Coquitlam, JD Botezelli PhD measures your resting metabolic rate by indirect calorimetry, your body composition by bioimpedance and, where it is recommended, the thickness of your body fat by ultrasound. The full assessment takes 60 minutes and costs $175 CAD + GST. The bioimpedance assessment takes 30 minutes and costs $100 CAD + GST. Both come with a written review, and you do not need to be in a program to book one.

The studio is at 2380 Ranger Lane, Unit 83, Port Coquitlam, in the Tri-Cities area of Metro Vancouver.

Full Metabolic & Body Composition Assessment

$175CAD + GST

The same assessment every in-person program starts with.

  • Resting metabolic rate by indirect calorimetry (Breezing): your calorie burn at rest, measured
  • Bioimpedance (InBody 270): fat mass, lean mass and body water, with lean mass for each arm, each leg and the trunk
  • Ultrasound (BodyMetrix) where recommended: women below 35% body fat, men below 30%
  • A walkthrough of every number, and a written review from me

Bioimpedance + Written Review

$100CAD + GST

A focused snapshot of lean mass, fat mass and hydration.

  • Bioimpedance (InBody 270): body fat, lean mass and body water
  • Lean mass for each arm, each leg and the trunk, and any left-right difference
  • Your basal metabolic rate as the scan estimates it (the full assessment measures it)
  • A walkthrough of every number, and a written review from me
Book bioimpedance only

Each assessment covers the measurements and what they mean for you. A meal plan and a training program come with the programs, and every in-person program starts with the full assessment. Join a program after the full assessment and half of its fee is credited toward it. See the programs

What each test measures

Each instrument answers a different question, so the full assessment uses all three.

  • Indirect calorimetry Resting metabolic rate, measured.

    Indirect calorimetry

You rest and breathe into a mask for 10 to 15 minutes. The device reads how much oxygen you use and how much carbon dioxide you breathe out, and calculates the energy your body burns at rest. That resting number is usually 60 to 70% of what you burn in a day.

Online calculators estimate it from equations built on averages. For some people they land 200 to 500 calories a day away from the measured value.

    Why the calculator misses
  • Bioimpedance Lean mass, fat mass and body water.

    Bioimpedance

You step onto the InBody 270 and hold its hand electrodes. A small electrical current passes through you: lean tissue holds water and conducts it well, and fat resists it. From that resistance the scan estimates body water, lean mass and fat mass, for your whole body and for each limb and your trunk.

A single reading moves with hydration, a recent meal and the time of day, which is why the preparation below matters. Under the same conditions, repeat readings are very consistent.

    Bioimpedance, DEXA and tracking
  • Ultrasound Fat thickness by site.

    Ultrasound

A hand-held BodyMetrix probe measures the thickness of the fat under the skin at set sites. It shows where the fat is, which helps when your total body fat is falling and one area seems slow to follow.

It is used where it is recommended: for women below 35% body fat and men below 30%.

What the written review contains

In the room I go through every number with you. The written review keeps the same results for later, and gives you a baseline to compare against next time.

  • Your measured resting metabolic rate, in calories a day (full assessment)
  • Fat mass, lean mass and body water
  • Lean mass for each arm, each leg and the trunk, with any left-right difference
  • Fat thickness at each ultrasound site, when ultrasound is used
  • Where each number sits against healthy ranges
  • What the numbers mean for your goal

I hold a PhD in Physiology, Endocrinology and Metabolism, and I am not a physician. The review explains your data and diagnoses nothing. When a result is a question for your doctor, I will say so.

Who books an assessment

  • You set your calories from an app or an online calculator and the numbers are not adding up. A measured resting metabolic rate replaces the estimate.
  • You are losing weight, on GLP-1 medication or not, and want to know whether it is fat or muscle. If you are on a GLP-1, see coaching on GLP-1 medication.
  • You lift and want your lean mass limb by limb, including side-to-side differences.
  • You want the numbers before you decide on a program.

It is an in-person service in Port Coquitlam. If you live elsewhere, the online programs use photographs and measurements in its place.

How to prepare

Bioimpedance and calorimetry both read your body as it is on the day. The preparation is what makes the numbers worth trusting.

  • No caffeine for 12 hours before your appointment.
  • No food or water for at least 4 hours before.
  • No alcohol and no intense exercise beforehand.
  • If you plan to measure again later, book the same time of day and repeat the same preparation, so the two readings compare.

Questions about the assessments

How much does a resting metabolic rate test cost in Port Coquitlam?

The resting metabolic rate test is part of the Full Metabolic & Body Composition Assessment: $175 CAD + GST for 60 minutes, which also includes bioimpedance, ultrasound where recommended and a written review. If you only want body composition, the bioimpedance assessment is $100 CAD + GST for 30 minutes.

Do I have to be a client to book an assessment?

No. Both assessments are open to anyone. You choose a time and pay in the same booking step.

How long does the RMR test take?

The breathing measurement itself takes 10 to 15 minutes at rest. The full appointment, with bioimpedance, ultrasound where recommended and the walkthrough of your results, is 60 minutes.

Is a measured RMR different from the number a calculator gives me?

A calculator predicts your resting burn from an equation built on population averages. Indirect calorimetry measures yours, from the oxygen you use and the carbon dioxide you breathe out. For many people the two land close together. For some they are 200 to 500 calories a day apart, and a gap that size is enough to stall a plan.

Can I use the assessment to track progress?

Yes. Bioimpedance is very consistent when the conditions repeat, so book the same time of day and follow the same preparation each time. The in-person programs build repeat measurements in: GLP-1 Support, for example, includes four bioimpedance assessments.

Is this a medical test?

No. It is a coaching measurement. JD Botezelli PhD holds a PhD in Physiology, Endocrinology and Metabolism and is not a physician, so he does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. If a result belongs with your doctor, he will tell you.

What happens after the assessment?

You have your numbers and the written review. If you then join a program, half of the $175 you paid for the full assessment is credited toward it. See the programs.
